Hello, How Are You?

Over the past two years, during a time of social distancing, phone calls and video conferencing have kept us all connected. How might these technologies change in years to come?

Take a seat and talk with someone in our partner site in Doha, Qatar, or leave your thoughts for someone in the future to discover. Your likeness will be rendered into a holographic image, then animated by a graphic overlay. You may recognize similarities in the interface to both past and current communication technologies, including Morse code, emoji, and text bubbles.

Hello, How Are You? takes its inspiration from time capsules: a term coined in 1939, on the occasion of the New York World’s Fair. A long metal tube was filled with objects, text in many languages, and communication devices for citizens of the distant future to discover.

Description: A large black booth. Viewers can see inside the booth, as it is open on two sides. Inside of the booth is a circle on the floor for someone to stand or sit in. The viewer will face the screen.

Instructions: Stand in front of the screen, in the middle of the circle on the floor. Hello, How Are You? will activate and share further instructions on screen.

Description: The interactive will greet the user by stating “Hi! How r u?” A sunglasses emoji. Then, “So, what do you want to say to the future?” Next, a graphic overlay in the shape of the viewer’s body will show up. The overlay style has various options. The overlays are, moving text bubbles that resemble texting on a phone, moving morse code, Red, blue, and green vertical rectangles moving across the screen in unity with the overlaying text, “Hi! How r u? Sunglasses emoji, “So, what do you want to say to the future?” Multiple emojis fill up the screen then the sunglasses emoji fills up the screen. A TV style human figure with overlapping red, green, purple, blue colors. The overlaying text, “Hi! How r u? Sunglasses emoji, “So, what do you want to say to the future” text dances around and settles over the image. Sound waves underneath the text. A cube style visual of the visitor’s body over text that reads, “My Message for the future is peace for everyone…” and other text that isn’t legible due to the visitor’s form in front of it.
