We cannot understand the future without first understanding the past.
This first section of FUTURES, drawn entirely from Smithsonian collections and research, looks at the innovations of previous generations. These inspiring objects and ideas illuminate the many ways people have tried to make a brighter tomorrow.
Not all past predictions came true. Those that did often had unintended or unfair consequences. But taken together, these historical visions shaped our present, as well as the dreams we have for the future. We are, after all, only the latest in a long line of future-makers.

There are quotations graphically printed on the perimeter walls of this hall. The quotes state:
“The visions we offer our children change the future. It matters what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies. Dreams are maps.” – Carl Sagan
“Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending.” – Kermit the Frog
